The apex court dismissed the appeal filed by the BJP candidate, who had lost the poll from the state, challenging the verdict of the Jharkhand High Court which had rejected the plea against Sahu’s election. The high court had delivered its judgement on January 17 this year and dismissed the election petition filed by Pradeep Kumar Sonthalia, who was a BJP candidate in the 2018 Rajya Sabha poll from Jharkhand, challenging Sahu’s election as a member of the upper house.
Supreme Court on Thursday acknowledged the right of farmers to non-violent protests, and said it was thinking of setting up an “impartial and independent” panel of agriculture experts and farmer unions to resolve the impasse over three contentious farm laws. A bench headed by Chief Justice S A Bobde said it would set up the committee which may include experts like P Sainath and representatives of the government and farmers’ bodies to look for the resolution of the deadlock over the statutes.
A US court has dismissed a $100-million lawsuit filed against Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah after the litigants – a separatist Kashmir Khalistan outfit and two associates – failed to appear before it at two scheduled hearings. The suit was filed on September 19, 2019, days before Modi’s historic “Howdy, Modi!” event in Houston, Texas. The case was terminated by Judge Andrew S Hanen of the US District Court in Texas on October 22.

Chandrachud. “This is gross insinuation against the entirety of the Supreme Court of India — that the Supreme Court of India is not an independent and impartial institution and so too its judges, but on the other hand is a court of the ruling party, the BJP, existing for the BJP’s benefit. All this in my opinion constitutes criminal contempt of court,” the AG said in his letter to the lawyers.

Delhi High Court observed that its blanket order extending interim bails and paroles granted to prisoners in view of the COVID-19 pandemic should come to an end as the number of infected persons in jails here was only three. According to the Director-General (Prisons), over 6,700 prisoners are out on bail or parole and continue to remain outside, in view of the blanket order passed and extended from time-to-time by a full bench of the high court.
